About the landmark

The Brandenburg Gate was built from 1788 to 1791 to plans by Carl Gotthard Langhans, and the Quadriga on its roof is the work of Johann Gottfried Schadow. During the division of Berlin it stood right at the Wall and was out of reach for almost three decades. Since 1989 it has been a symbol of reunification and is Berlin's best-known landmark.
